CIVIC EDUCATION COUNCIL
Thinking Globally and Acting Locally
CEC AT A GLANCE
Here at CEC, we know that sometimes all it takes to change the world is informed youth action. Since our founding in 2014, we have been determined to facilitate that work. Our purpose is to foster and strengthen civic education in public schools, by supporting constructivist, project-based learning aimed at developing students’ critical thinking, historical analysis skills and capacity for informed public speech. We are engaged in applied action research on civic education practices and approaches, as we seek to share and apply our research findings to improve our education system.
ACTIVITIES
The Civic Education Council is engaged in the work of hearing, elevating and honoring youth voice. The work we do at CEC is aimed at providing a holistic, grassroots approach to solving some of our society’s biggest challenges. We think young people are the key to historically informed political change that works towards our desired preferred future.
GETTING YOUNG PEOPLE INVOLVED
At CEC, we are dedicated to stepping up our efforts to get young people involved in community issues. One of our partners in this work has been AiKea, a growing movement of individuals & organizations who care about the future of Hawai’i and are committed to building a larger social & political movement.
CONSTITUTIONALISM
AND CITIZEN POWER
Working with the Center for Civic Education, our goal is to provide opportunities for young people to have meaningful conversations with each other and with political and community leaders about constitutionalism, citizenship and youth power through Project Citizen and We the People.
